Department: Children’s services
Reports to: Head of children’s department
Hours: 30 hours / week, over 5 days

Description of tasks and responsibilities at four points of service:

Under the supervision of the head of children’s services, the SCC will support the mothers and children living at the shelter. The special care counsellor will be working with mothers and children in their respective environments. They will be working within the organization’s mandate and client’s best interest.

Create and implement therapeutic interventions with mothers and children both individually and in dyads.
Foster creative programming that encourages healthy attachment between mother and children.
Provide opportunities for creative expression with children.
Provide respite care for mothers.
Supervise children during mother’s appointments.
Develop weekly workshops for clients around self-care.
Animate special activities for mothers and children.
Provide quality of life services at the shelter.
Facilitate groups within the network.
Participate in weekly supervision.
Participating in outreaches in the community.
Participate in daily shelter tasks (ie. Answer phones, screenings).
Additional tasks may be added at the discretion of the department supervisor.

Candidate Profile:

Strong counseling skills and understanding dynamics of conjugal violence and impacts of conjugal violence on children
Understanding of intercultural approach and intervention
Strong public speaking skills
Good judgment, empathy, flexibility, ability to take initiative
English and French fluency (3rd language an asset)
Desire to work for a community organization
