Summary of job description

Reporting to the Online Program Portfolio Manager and part of an instructional design team, the Online Course Designer works closely with content experts and TLS staff to design, develop and implement courses. online for McGill’s fully online credit programs.

Primary responsibilities:

Instructional design
Uses the ADDIE model (or other systematic approach) in collaboration with team members
Adheres to McGill course design standards and policies
Develops learning materials in consultation with content experts / instructors, multimedia production, IT services, libraries and other units as appropriate
Reviews and revises online learning material developed by instructor for effective online delivery
Develops assessment strategies and activities in consultation with content experts / instructors
Manage course production schedules
Plan and monitor course design, activities and resources required to meet online delivery deadlines
Participate in program-level course design in terms of consistency and continuity
Participate in quality assurance processes and ensure that the procedures are implemented
Share regularly with the design team issues and lessons learned
Integrate and create course materials, assessments and learning activities in the LMS
Support for teaching and learning online
Develops online tutorials for online education
Provides coaching to online instructors and TAs to effectively use online technologies and online teaching techniques
Develops online tutorials for students to effectively use online technologies

Education
Undergraduate degree (master’s degree preferred) in educational technology, instructional technology or other relevant field.

Three years of experience designing online courses in higher education
Proof of a solid foundation in instructional design theory and implementation in online learning
Knowledge of a variety of web-based teaching technologies
Evidence of a strong ability to establish and maintain work priorities and deadlines
Familiarity with learning management systems (Brightspace preferred).
Knowledge of Open Educational Resources (OER)
Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills

Language requirements

Must be fluent in English and French
